Ready for White-Out Battle at ICB AW14
We know it’s a winter wonderland out there. It’s exciting. It’s beautiful. You get to work from home more often and cuddle by the fire, furnace, or for most NYC residents, inside your favorite wine bar or coffee shop.
Close Your Eyes and Visualize…healthy winter skin at ICB AW14
Then all of the sudden, your skin melts down into small red patches of itchy delight. No, it wasn’t because of the cappuccino you just had over your 30 minute conference call. No, it wasn’t the red wine you had for lunch.
It’s…..drumroll…..WINTER. Heating. Dry air. Hell freezing over.
Stay Calm. Winter doesn’t last Forever!
Yes, that’s right. That means those lipbalms, eyecreams, and everything else you were using over the summer and fall are pretty much void.

So listen up ICB girls! It’s time to change your skin routine, your wardrobe, and your outlook and this is the prime month to apply those style savvy skills.
Here’s our Top Picks for 2015’s Winter Skin Essentials:
Hunt down a glycolic acid-filled face wash (Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 3 Percent Facial Wash is awesome), which will gently exfoliate and wash away dead skin cells each time your rinse without irritation normally caused by granular scrubs. Use daily for a brighter complexion — and for the absorption of your moisturizer, which would otherwise be blocked from said dead skin cells.
Read: Cream. Not lotion. During the winter, your face needs a heavier cream to protect it from cold, harsh air and biting wind — even if you run away from heavier moisturizers usually. The trick to one size fits all cream? Look for oil-free, non-comedogenic (aka non-pore clogging) as well as one that’s free of potential allergens. Give Kiehls Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel-Cream a shot: We’ve never met someone who didn’t like it!
Even if you have never used eye cream a day in your life, it’s a must for winter. Eye skin is crazy thin, so it takes a major beating when the weather gets harsh. Try Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream SPF 34, which hydrates without feeling heavy and has a hefty dose of SPF to protect the skin. (Because, let’s be real, that SPF 7 crap isn’t going to cut it.)
The same reason you need to exfoliate your face, you need to also scrub your bod so the skin stays ready to soak up moisturizers. But don’t shop for this one: Instead, use a coconut oil- and sugar-based scrub you can DIY from your kitchen. The ingredients are pretty simple, too — sugar is a humectant, and coconut oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-tons-of-bad-things benefits to keep you clean and healthy. Frankly, we’ve yet to find one in any store that beats my one-cup brown sugar, half-cup coconut oil combo. Just mix, pop it in a mason jar or Tupperware and use it once or twice a week. Bonus: It can double as a scalp scrub when your head gets itchy.
Two words: fragrance-free. Yes, those super-fragrant lotions may smell pretty, but perfume-laden options can irritate and even — get this — actually dry out skin. So, I say go simple for winter, ’cause no one’s gonna smell the scented stuff under skinny jeans and a sweater anyway. My fave is the Burts Bees Fragrance-free Shea Butter and Vitamin E Body Lotion. It’s insane — and totally eco-friendly, too.
OK, OK. So it’s not a skin care product, but a humidifer helps just as much as your favorite lotion long-term would when it comes to keeping skin fresh. They’re literally THE sure-fire way to get rid of the dry air. Pick up a chic one for your bedroom — the Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier is great (and so cute in green!), plus a USB-powered one for your desk. (We rock the Homedics HUM-CM10.)
